Koh Samui

Despite political issues shrouding the country, we decided it was safe enough to skip back to Thailand, with the goal of relaxing over a long weekend in Koh Samui, an island off the eastern coast. Indeed, we "did" very little, enjoying soaking up the sun with a good book, cocktails, and lots of beach and water play.

We chose to stay at Beach Republic, which was the perfect, stylish retreat for our family. Here we enjoyed the comforts of a private 2-bedroom pool villa, with outdoor bathrooms, shower, and living areas, and inside bedrooms with air-con and premium sheets. My three kids fit easily in the upstairs room, complete with twin bed and double bed. Landscaping was beautiful and well-kept, the large pool was very refreshing and deep enough to swim comfortably in, and the couch made a comfy reading spot. Bonus: every evening at 5:00, friendly staff delivered mini desserts to our room--yummy!

In the community areas, the large pool was very inviting, surrounded by sun chairs, umbrellas, and several covered beds facing the ocean. We set up camp on one of these, and enjoyed the turquoise water while keeping an easy eye on our kids playing in the sand below or in the pool behind. A call button facilitated ordering food and drinks--perfect!

My husband and I took relaxing turns at the spa, and the food in the stylish restaurant was very good, especially the red curry and soft shell crab. We ventured out only one night with a walk along the beach, ending up at a local Thai restaurant run by a very sweet, very busy woman.

We also booked a day tour with 100 Degrees East to nearby Ang Thong Marine Park. Included in the tour was a snorkeling adventure, sea kayaking, lunch on a secluded beach, and a short hike to view the Emerald Lake. Highlights were snorkeling inside a sea cave, spotting a lion fish, and watching our kayak guide dig up a large sand crab!

We enjoyed our easy holiday in Thailand, the land of smiles (and I loved the short, direct flight!) Next trip? USA, here we come!
